FlyingTrilobite on Instagram

flyingtrilobite is my new Instagram handle!

I have been on Instagram for a long time under the glendonmellow handle, but I locked up the account once I started using it to primarily share pics of my family. This new account will be for my past art and current works in progress. Come follow me for more #sciart weirdness.

Although I've been on Instagram a long time, it has surprised me how much more effective hashtags are on this platform than any other. Makes sense since it's one of only two ways to search.

Oh and in case you prefer Tumblr, all of my Instagrams are being posted there directly on Trilobite Boy.

Thanks everyone for continuing interest and support in my artwork.

Insomnia Sketching

Lately I haven't been able to sleep very well, usually Getting 4 or 5 hours a night. Tonight I woke up abruptly at 3:30am and decided to work on this concept that has been burning in my brain for a while.

Using my Wacom Intuos Creative  Stylus and ArtRage for iPad, I wanted to get the general composition and colour palette down for a trilobite copter scene. It's one of the many images resting in my brain for my upcoming project, "Field Guide to Flying Trilobites". It's a book I'd like to do and launch with a Patreon.

I have a number of other painting commitments I'm excited to finish, and I promised myself that I would work on the Field Guide this year in addition to them. I guess this is a preview!

Thanks, insomnia.

I originally put versions of this digital sketch here, for the 10th anniversary of 9/11. I think like so many other people, my life can be divided a little bit as before and after it happened. I remember the fear and confusion. Were there more planes?  I was managing an art store at the time here in Toronto, and we let staff use the phones to call loved ones, long distance or not. I distinctly recall a woman demanding to see the manager (me) because we were out of Felt Grey Canson Mi-Teintes paper - I thought, she either doesn't know what happened, or she's panicking. We closed after a little while.

I don't have any great insights. There were a great many acts of heroism that day. I know one day, if I need to explain it to my boys it will be with the somber and excellent Spider-Man comic that Marvel put out: focus on the emergency service heroes rather than the madmen.

Be good to each other out there. We are one world with many ways of living.
